System Description
The system operates via three primary subsystems: ignition, fuel, and oil. It features an independent combustion chamber mounted to each wingtip, which generates a high-visibility white smoke trail by mixing forced air from a hole in the leading edge, electric ignition, and aircraft fuel to create combustion. Aviation smoke oil is then injected into the exhaust at the aft section of the chamber to vaporize into smoke.
Fuel System
Fuel is sourced directly from the aircraft’s primary fuel system, utilizing either Avgas or Mogas. The system requires an operating fuel pressure of 15-35 PSI and a flow rate of 3.75 gal/hr. For carbureted aircraft, a supplementary fuel pump, pressure regulator, and fuel solenoid are required to boost pressure to the precision-sized nozzles. Fuel-injected aircraft, maintaining at least 15 PSI, utilize only a fuel solenoid to manage fuel flow.
Smoke Oil System
The smoke oil subsystem requires a dedicated tank and utilizes an oil filter, pump, and pressure regulator to deliver aviation smoke oil to the wingtips at a pump outlet pressure at a flow rate of 1.0 gal/min total (0.5 gal/min per wingtip). Use of Pure White Smoke by Petroblend is recommended.
Electrical and Control System
The electrical architecture centers on a 14V or 28V DC System Control Box and dual, wingtip-mounted Ignition Boxes. Operation is managed via a master arm switch to initialize power and a trigger switch (momentary or latching) to actuate the fuel solenoid, oil pump, and ignition sequence.
